Island Mama in the Kitchen: A Tip

When I find something that makes my life easier I like to share it.  Like when I discovered a pizza cutter is fantastic for cutting things into bite size pieces for your little one and it can even be used one handed while holding the fussy, impatient, hungry little one, I made sure to tell everyone I knew that had a baby or toddler.  Or when I finally tried Google calendars and realized I could have several colour coded calendars in one, I knew I had to blog about it.

So here's the tip of the week that has made my life easier and my grocery bill smaller... sure it maybe only by a few cents but in this economy every little bit helps right?

I wash a lot of dishes... by hand... we don't have a dishwasher.  Sometimes I feel like all I do is wash dishes. Anyway this tip won't reduce the amount of dishes or the time spent washing them, but it will reduce what you spend on dish liquid.  I used to by the expensive brands but as our family size has increased faster than our grocery budget, I have looked for ways to make a dollar stretch.  I started buying a less expensive brand of dish liquid but the thing I hate most is having a dish liquid that does not cut grease.  I found I was using twice as much of the cheaper brand so it really wasn't saving anything.  That is until I discovered that putting about 1/8- 1/4 of white vinegar in the water cuts the grease.  The dishes come out squeaky clean.. I can even wash a glass after a pan of bacon fat and the glass will sparkle!

Maybe you knew that already, but if you didn't, that tip is my gift to you!!

Happy dish-washing!

Works For me Wednesday: Birthday countdown

works for me wednesday at we are that family

Eli's birthday is coming up soon. It is hard to believe but he is going to be 5! As with any child, he is super excited about his birthday and for months he has been asking the question....

" How many days until my birthday?"

As we have gotten closer, I was going to help him make a paper chain to count down the days like we did here but instead I had another idea. I had just made a new batch of homemade play dough (strawberry scented...yummy!) so I shaped a blob of it into a little cake and stuck 10 candles in (his birthday was 10 days away at that point). Each morning he gets to remove a candle and count how many are left. He was so excited, the first morning he was up at about 6:30 asking if he could take a candle from his cake! It is a great way for him to count down the days until he is five.

Organizing Books

I know this is a Works for Me WEDNESDAY post and it is now Thursday but hey... that's what my life is like right now :) Always playing catch up. With 3 and 3/4 kids I feel like I play catch up with the dishes, the laundry, school prep... just about everything. SO when I find something that works for me I get really excited. We have books... lots of books... from board books to chapter books cause that's the stages we are at right now. The kids have a book shelf which they share but it wasn't working out so well...mainly because we couldn't keep it organized. KaiKai always did a great job tidying it up but it seemed like 5 minutes later it would be a mess again. Buttercup has also recently taken to filling a shopping bag with books and taking them all over the house... putting them back neatly is always a little challenging for her... hence the chaos on the bookshelf. One evening this week as I went to tidy it... yet again I started to realise how many books we had that we hadn't read, or hadn't read for a long time... only because they were usually buried under other books. I decide that I had had enough of the chaos. I remembered reading on a few blogs (don't remember which ones) how they only put out a few books for their kids each week and rotated them. I sorted the books according to age appropriateness/ reading level etc. and took out 10 books for each child. I got 3 baskets and labeled them and put in the books for the week. Each Sunday I will switch out some or all of the books so that they always have something fresh to read. The rest are stored in a convenient place and will now have a chance to be read!! Not an earth shattering idea, but it WORKS FOR ME (and that makes me happy:)!
